Lower Ninth Ward: Redefine Flood Wall
Master Plan
During hurricane Katrina (2005), the flood walls along the Lower Ninth Ward were breached, and eighty percent of New Orleans parish was flooded for several months.
The existing flood wall is a big barrier to the Lower Ninth Ward community members. To most residents, this wall means death. Thousands residential lost their life because of this fallen wall. This rigid, concrete wall also separates the neighborhood members from water body and natural landscape on the other side of the wall. Several paintings are painted on the wall to express neighborhood members’ feeling about Hurricane Katrina.
This project is to use the existing wall as a story board and art display area for the community. Paintings will be introduced to this area to honor history, culture, and people of the Lower Ninth Ward. By redefining this wall, this area can be a major communication area for the living and the dead, and the place for community member to gather, and to communicate. A overpass bridge can also connect the neighborhood to the other side of the wall where it is suggested to be a wetland park.
